I, however, would not say that it's a blurring the line into the rogue-like/lite genre though. The reasons you gave above are fine, and it's good that you just said that maybe you want to save scrum, I didn't really want to put it out there since many read it as a bad word, despite it being somewhat common and I have done it myself sometimes. I do like RPG's though, its these awkward instances where they blur the line and tout themselves as one thing whilst delivering an experience that resembles another that becomes aggravating to no end. There's a reason I specifically avoid the Roguelike genre - I don't at all find it enjoyable or fun. Unless these are merely shortcoming of the Beta, then yes I am forced into a playstyle that isn't at all preferable, wasn't at all made clear at the time of backing, and isn't at all what I think of when I recall Jrpg's of old.
